Cycads are often called “living fossils” because their lineage stretches back hundreds of millions of years.

It has a fern‑like appearance with glossy, pinnate leaves. Many plants sold in horticulture under names like Zamia fischeri are actually Z. vasquezii due to long‑standing confusion between the two species.

📍 Range & Natural Distribution

Endemic to eastern Mexico, specifically northern Veracruz state.

Wild populations are extremely restricted — no more than about 50 mature individuals in total, known from only two wild sites.

This gulf coastal region of Mexico is biologically rich but has been heavily altered by agriculture, logging and land conversion. The remaining suitable habitat is highly fragmented.

🌳 Natural Habitat

Zamia vasquezii occurs in:

Semi‑evergreen forests and pine‑oak woodlands.

Shaded understory and moist lowland forest edges at elevations roughly 200–700 m above sea level.

The soils are typically well‑drained and shallow, often on slopes that moderate root exposure and moisture.

Some horticultural references suggest it tolerates semi‑shade with moderate water — consistent with its understory preferences in nature — but this is about cultivation, not wild performance.

⚠️ Conservation Status

IUCN Red List: Critically Endangered — one of the highest threat categories.

Major threats:

Habitat loss from deforestation and land conversion.

Population fragmentation (small, isolated pockets of plants).

Even though this cycad is relatively common in cultivation (often mis‑labeled), those cultivated plants represent ex‑situ collections; they don’t replace the need to protect wild populations and gene diversity.

🧬 Biology & Ecology

Gymnosperm — produces cones (not true flowers), with separate male and female plants (dioecious).

Typically slow‑growing, with a mostly subterranean stem and a cluster of evergreen leaves.

Seeds may have a fleshy outer layer (sarcotesta), but the exact dispersal ecology isn’t well documented; many cycads rely on animals for seed movement.

Zamia vasquezii is a species of cycad (a group of ancient, gymnosperm plants that predate flowering plants) in the family Zamiaceae.
